Urmi always wanted to be an artist so she got a BFA from Delhi College of Art, New Delhi in 1996. Though she truly started living her dream 20 years later, in 2016. In the intervening years she worked in the booming IT industry as a Graphic Designer/UI UX expert working on several exciting projects at various companies. The skills she learnt during her time in IT are valuable when creating digital artwork, flyers and creating social media content.
Travel is always inspirational for her, so when her family moved to Munich for 5 years (2014-2019) it recharged her vision of being an artist. She dug deep and found the courage to finally show her work on a public platform in collaboration with other artists in 2018. She has since gone on to show her work in Venice, New York, Sweden and Singapore in the last few years. The pandemic didn't stop her from continuing to create art and exhibiting too. Instead, it was another opportunity to gather one's thoughts and go forward.
As an artist she finds herself in constant learning and practicing mode. She works in various mediums and sometimes does mixed media as well. Urmi doesn't believe in restricting herself to one medium while creating art. Recently, she found herself drawn to expressive, abstract, modern landscapes. She enjoys sketching all over the city with her little sketch book. This gives her an opportunity to really observe her surroundings and learn more deeply about the people, cultures, weather, food, traffic and even the sounds.
My recent collection of landscapes in acrylic is more introspective and expressive than before. It feels less like an exact imitation of my observation and more like it's been created from memory or a feeling. This is because no reference photo was used for this collection. Instead, it was a process of expressing something that I had either seen, dreamt and/or imagined. The feeling of calm is sometimes hard to express or invoke but these paintings are trying to do just that. The colors are muted and shimmery and if one were to walk past this collection it feels like the painting is glistening in a calm, peaceful state.
