B Jaya Lakshmi

B. Jaya Lakshmi, born in 1960 in Delhi, India, is an artist who transitioned from a 23-year career as a math and science teacher to pursue her passion for painting. She holds a senior Diploma in painting from Rabindra Bharathi University, India. In 2010, she discovered the encaustic medium in Denver, Colorado, and trained under Caryl St. Ama, Linda Robertson, and Lanette Duncan in the USA.

Creative from a young age, Jaya Lakshmi explored her talents in school by making backdrops, props, and costumes for plays. Her artistic expression reflects her rich experiences with students, people around her, and extensive travels, often depicting nature missed in the urban landscape of Delhi.

Specializing in the ancient encaustic technique used by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, she creates art with beeswax, plant resin, and pigments. Over two decades, she has developed innovative methods in this medium, producing abstract and representational works with rich textures and layers.

Nature has always captivated B Jayalakshmi with its immense beauty, versatility, and adaptability. As both an artist and an educator, she feels a profound responsibility to nurture and protect the natural world.

Her current series of paintings and sculptures is inspired by the coral reefs in Hawaii, discovered during one of her many travels. Through her sculptural works, Jayalakshmi aims to capture and convey the enchanting and vibrant underwater ecosystems teeming with diverse marine life. These delicate structures play a crucial role in maintaining ocean health but are increasingly threatened by climate change and pollution.

Beyond their visual appeal, Jayalakshmi’s works carry a deeper message. They serve as a reminder of the fragility of the coral ecosystem and the crucial need to act to preserve these underwater treasures for future generations. Committed to nurturing nature, she uses eco-friendly materials in her art, such as beeswax, plant resin, and wood as substrates.

Jaya Lakshmi has held 11 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in India and abroad, including an art residency in Miami during Art Basel in 2019. Her paintings are part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Encaustic Art in the USA and the Museum of Sacred Art (MOSA) in Belgium. Her work is featured in “108 Portraits of Indian and Contemporary Art” by Dr. Alka Pande and in private collections worldwide.
